Black eye and Interpol

I think I'm getting a black eye. Jas woke me yesterday by diving on my head, catching me just below with his elbow. Amazing what damage that little elbow can do.
But enough of that. I WENT TO SEE INTERPOL!!! *SQUEE*
They were so amazing. We queued up for an hour to get in. We could hear them doing the soundcheck and even that sounded amazing. The plan was to grab a spot at the front as soon as we got in and I would have done it, too, but while I was in the queue a recurring medical condition I've had all my life reared itself and I was in too much pain, so we grabbed a booth seat, which was directly facing the stage and about 12 metres from it (it was a tiny venue - I'm hopeless with figures but I'd say 2000-5000 people). Just as well, really, 'cos they didn't come on for about three hours. The support band - from Perth, called Snowman - weren't bad, kind of Dead Kennedy's meets B52s with some Hawaiian surfing guitar thrown in. But by the fourth song I was over it.
Eventually they came on and it was amazing. Better live than on their albums. One of my top three gigs of all time (the others are The Cure and Radiohead). They opened with Next Exit and I immediately felt better and got up and danced in the tiny space between the seat and the table. At first I was sitting on the back of the booth and had an amazing view, but the bastard security guard told me to get down. We weren't blocking anyone's view - how annoying! Anyway, here's the songs they played (in no particular order): Next Exit, Evil, Narc, Slow Hands, Not Even Jail, Public Pervert, Length of Love, A Time To Be So Small, Untitled, PDA, Say Hello To Angels, Hands Away, Obstacle 2, Stella Was a Diver..., Roland. I'm pretty sure that was it, it's a bit of a blur 'cos I was just singing and dancing and having a great time and all the songs rolled together. There was this really cute bit when Paul started playing Hands Away and some guy was clapping, and Paul stopped playing and said, "Don't do that. You're throwing me off." Then he laughed and said, "I appreciate it, but I've got to keep my own rhythm". It was great to see them in the flesh: Paul being all shy and intense, occasionally sitting down to play, smoking while he sang, Daniel playing his guitar like it was the most important thing in the world, mostly ignoring the audience but coming to the front of the stage occasionally to keep us happy, Carlos showing off, playing his guitar like it was a gun or something he wanted to have sex with, generally posing a lot. If I had any criticism, it was that they didn't seem to give anything of themselves, they were just playing the music and getting on with it. But they did such an amazing job, I forgave them that. And there were lots of times where Daniel and Paul played facing each other, at one point almost resting their heads on each others' shoulders, and Paul and Carlos did that a lot too. I could have listened for so much longer. As far as hotness goes, I think Daniel wins it for me. I love Carlos' dress sense but he's a bit posey for me. But what the hell, I'd be happy to meet any of them. I could talk about their music for hours. In fact, when I got home I dreamt I was with them and we talked about art and stuff for ages, mostly Andy Warrhol and Basquiat. *lol* After the gig, we tried to find the back stage door but no luck, so we went home.
No doubt next time they come back it will be at a bigger venue, so I'm glad I got in now. Just hope they don't leave it too long before they return. Fantastic!!!!
PS Yesterday I lost my voice through a cold, but today it's better after all that husky singing. Who'd have thought?

...Carlos showing off, playing his guitar like it was a gun or something he wanted to have sex with

That thought makes me a very happy Mena.

...Daniel and Paul played facing each other, at one point almost resting their heads on each others' shoulders, and Paul and Carlos did that a lot too.

That one as well.

How come, like, everyone on my friend list is seeing Interpol?! Why can't I?! I need to see them when they come to America again...*grumbles*

I knew those images would put a lusty grin on your face.
Go hang out in NY and you can see them anytime. *LOL* Yeah, like it's that easy, but pffff, at least you're on the same continent as a supercool band!!!

Am I that predictable? Yes. ;p

Hah! I hate the American bands! I don't consider Interpol an American band, however, because two of the members weren't born here.

Meh, I'd rather be in Europe.

I know what you mean. Interpol seem so British, but then you listen to Paul's accent and you can hear they're not. I love it when bands/people subvert your judgements like that.

Who wouldn't rather be in Europe? I always get insanely jealous of UK people when I read the gig guide of the UK-based music mags. Oh, to take seeing all the bands I dream of for granted!

I don't get jealous of UK people, but I do get angry at my Mum for not having me there. Hehe...

...But if I were in the UK, I'd be like any other person. Here in America, I stand out, 'cos I'm an Anglophile. XD

Standing out is the coolest. I've got a story about that: When I started my last year of school, I showed up with a Robert Smith haircut and black clothes (I'd been the quiet kid who no one noticed before that) and 98% of the school wouldn't talk to me. I didn't mind 'cos I hated most of them. Years later, a friend of mine ran into the most popular girl from school, and she told her how much she admired me for standing out and what a strong person I was. How funny is that?

Okay, so that's not really what we were talking about, but I just had to share that *blushes*
In Australia, it should be cool to be an Anglophile, I mean half the population originally came from the UK, but everyone's into America much more.

Yeah, it is. When I went to school, everyone wanted to talk to me 'cos I was stand-out-ish and I never talked to anyone because I didn't like them.

It's fine, your story was great!

Haha, as far as I'm concerned, America seems sooo much better than it really is when you see it on TV and such. It's got a huge false hype.

Maybe I just think that because I live here. Other people might not.

You mean it's not like it is on TV?! I always thought all Americans were like Jerry Seinfield or Oprah Winfrey, and New Yorkers are like Sex in the City. You mean they're not?!! *LOL* Like all Aussies are like Paul Hogan or Kylie Minogue! God, I hate the media. They only ever show this false image of the world when it's so pointless, 'cos the real stuff is so much better. There used to be a show here where this guy would just go up to people in the street and get them talking about their lives, and it was so fascinating. Really simple, no hype, and your expectations of people were always blown away. I wish there was more stuff like that.

I think America would be a bit like Australia in that there's lots of cool stuff, you just have to know where to find it.

Haha! That show does sound quite interesting...The closest show here that I've seen like that is the Andy Milonakis (sp?) show when some over-weight kid walks up to old ladies and repeats, "You know what I'm sayin'?" ...Or something like that.

Yeah, most likely. I don't know a lot about Australia, but that's the case in America.

yea, america would be nice!! i also am an avid interpol fan...hands away is amazing. i had to click on your user info becuase instead of "line" you said "queue", and in america, we definatley dont say that. not that it matters...wow, im done

Hi. Nice to meet you. At least they come from America, so you have more chance of seeing them. You could even bump into them one day in New York *lol*. Everyone takes ages to come to Australia, and then most bands skip Adelaide (not that I blame them). Which is why I totally freaked out when I heard they were coming here, and enjoyed every second they were on stage. Right now they're playing north of Sydney at a festival with Bloc Party. How cool would that be?

And there were lots of times where Daniel and Paul played facing each other, at one point almost resting their heads on each others' shoulders, and Paul and Carlos did that a lot too.

GAH! I'm insanely jealous. And I just happened to be listening to Antics right now.

The only NY band coming to my neck in the woods (Singapore) is The Bravery. Haven't decided if I should go see them.

Antics is such a gorgeous CD. I never get tired of it.
I'd go see The Bravery, even though I don't know many of their songs. It's nice to see a band live when you've heard a lot about them and make up your mind from the gig rather than the CD, just 'cos it happens so rarely. Then again, if you go and they're awful, don't blame me *lol*

I'll probably end up going alone. :D The husband will be at work and the only other person I know who is interested is not free as it's her graduation day and her mum will be in town. Boo effing hoo.

Yeah, my friends are the same. Either they're into different music or their lives don't allow for much concert-going. And the ones who do like Interpol couldn't decide, and when they did, it was too late for a ticket. I've informed them that next time a cool band comes here, I'm getting them a ticket whether they like it or not! Still, going to concerts alone can be fun. You never know who you'll meet and if you hate it, you can leave and no one complains.

Oh my gawd. I love Interpol. Turn on the Bright Lights and Antics are such great albums I will NEVER regret buying them.

And as for the Daniel Kessler, I'm a huge fan. :) I like Paul, but mainly in the Turn on the Bright Lights era. When he didn't need a haircut. How about a petition to get Paul Banks a haircut? Alex Kapranos had one to grow back his fringe, and Paul can have one to get rid of a few inches, ok like six, of his hair.

Yeah I think shorter suits him best but now I kind of like the longer hair, especially the way he kept brushing his fringe out of his face when singing. I think he likes to hide behind it, too. If we were to start a petition, could it be to get him in tighter pants? They are way too baggy!

I am so jealous right now.

you most definately win... especially for mentioning this:

Carlos showing off, playing his guitar like it was a gun or something he wanted to have sex with, generally posing a lot.

As I've said before, I'm usually jealous of you and the bands you get to see, so that makes us even ; )
That comment seems to have gone down very well. Surprising that! *lol*

"Obstacle 2, Stella Was a Diver..., Roland"

Had they played those 3 songs at Splendour I would have died a happy girl. But no. I screamed for them, oh hell did I scream, but no.

That show sounded wonderful. Carlos was being a stage-whore when I saw them too. But Daniel and Paul seemed most detached. And Sam was so far back he seemed to not exist.

Oh, and piles of envy as you have seen the one band left on my "MUST SEE BEFORE I DIE" list. Radiohead.

Gotta love Carlos being a stage-whore. I love the way Daniel is detached but in a cute way, like he's a bit shy, but comes to the front to keep the fangirls happy every now and then. God, that was a good concert. Can't wait til they program Rage. Be interesting to see what they've picked.

Yes, you must see Radiohead. I saw them on the OK Computer tour, was in the front row and it was a religious experience. In some parts when only Thom was singing, you could have heard a pin drop. Everyone was entranced. *sigh* Ah, Thom love. I tried to see them in Melbourne last time they came, but I just got off the plane to be phoned by a friend saying, "the show's been cancelled". Still, I'd rather Thom save his voice for more recordings that ruin it singing for me (see how giving I am!).

Ahh 'tis true. I'm so glad they came back - I was devastated after missing them the last time they toured here.
Ahh, that will be most interesting.

Ach! An earlier tour. You lucky, lucky thing. Front row. Oh God. I can only imagine. I have a perfect picture of what they would be like in my mind, and what you and others have said only confirms this image.
That Melbourne thing upset me. I knew a few people that had put their lives on hold to go and how painfully excited they were. Funnily enough I didn't blame the band at all. I just felt a small understanding of missing a band you were so close to seeing and had been waiting to long to see.
That's a good attitude indeed!

My good attitude was helped by the fact that I had nosebleed seats, and nothing could come close to the OK Computer tour. Plus I have lots of good friends in Melbourne who helped me get over it with rather a lot of Saki.

Here's a question, what would be your ideal festival? Say, 5-10 bands, from any era.

Ahh, good, good.

From ANY era? Oh dear. That makes it quite difficult indeed. This would vary on a day to day basis, but right now I'd say...

Radiohead
Muse
Interpol
Franz Ferdinand
Wolfmother
The Libertines circa '02
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Joy Division
The Arcade Fire
The Hives

hmm, that's pretty damn random. Some are just amazing or loads of fun live rather than great bands in general. And some are bands I wish I'd seen.

Your turn!

Ooh, that's good. You'd think I'd have worked mine out, but I haven't had a chance to think about it. Okay here goes:

Radiohead
Franz
Interpol
Bloc Party
Joy Division
The Arcade Fire
The Cure
Bauhaus
Duran Duran (circa 82)
David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust era)

Oh, there's so many more. I think it needs to be a two-day festival!

I think it needs to be week-long!!

Ooh, I ALMOST put Bowie in.

Bloc Party were good but I'm satisfied bloc-wise for the moment, The Cure would have been great in their hey-day rather than of late...

ahh I wish these things could actually happen

*is jealous of you seeing Bloc Party*
The Cure on the Faith tour, that would be cool.
Yeah, a week for sure. Just for us, so we never had to jostle for front row, and we could party with all the bands inbetween. Okay, maybe a couple hundred of our closest friends, but that's it!
