I think I'm getting a black eye. Jas woke me yesterday by diving on my head, catching me just below with his elbow. Amazing what damage that little elbow can do.
But enough of that. I WENT TO SEE INTERPOL!!! *SQUEE*
They were so amazing. We queued up for an hour to get in. We could hear them doing the soundcheck and even that sounded amazing. The plan was to grab a spot at the front as soon as we got in and I would have done it, too, but while I was in the queue a recurring medical condition I've had all my life reared itself and I was in too much pain, so we grabbed a booth seat, which was directly facing the stage and about 12 metres from it (it was a tiny venue - I'm hopeless with figures but I'd say 2000-5000 people). Just as well, really, 'cos they didn't come on for about three hours. The support band - from Perth, called Snowman - weren't bad, kind of Dead Kennedy's meets B52s with some Hawaiian surfing guitar thrown in. But by the fourth song I was over it.
Eventually they came on and it was amazing. Better live than on their albums. One of my top three gigs of all time (the others are The Cure and Radiohead). They opened with Next Exit and I immediately felt better and got up and danced in the tiny space between the seat and the table. At first I was sitting on the back of the booth and had an amazing view, but the bastard security guard told me to get down. We weren't blocking anyone's view - how annoying! Anyway, here's the songs they played (in no particular order): Next Exit, Evil, Narc, Slow Hands, Not Even Jail, Public Pervert, Length of Love, A Time To Be So Small, Untitled, PDA, Say Hello To Angels, Hands Away, Obstacle 2, Stella Was a Diver..., Roland. I'm pretty sure that was it, it's a bit of a blur 'cos I was just singing and dancing and having a great time and all the songs rolled together. There was this really cute bit when Paul started playing Hands Away and some guy was clapping, and Paul stopped playing and said, "Don't do that. You're throwing me off." Then he laughed and said, "I appreciate it, but I've got to keep my own rhythm". It was great to see them in the flesh: Paul being all shy and intense, occasionally sitting down to play, smoking while he sang, Daniel playing his guitar like it was the most important thing in the world, mostly ignoring the audience but coming to the front of the stage occasionally to keep us happy, Carlos showing off, playing his guitar like it was a gun or something he wanted to have sex with, generally posing a lot. If I had any criticism, it was that they didn't seem to give anything of themselves, they were just playing the music and getting on with it. But they did such an amazing job, I forgave them that. And there were lots of times where Daniel and Paul played facing each other, at one point almost resting their heads on each others' shoulders, and Paul and Carlos did that a lot too. I could have listened for so much longer. As far as hotness goes, I think Daniel wins it for me. I love Carlos' dress sense but he's a bit posey for me. But what the hell, I'd be happy to meet any of them. I could talk about their music for hours. In fact, when I got home I dreamt I was with them and we talked about art and stuff for ages, mostly Andy Warrhol and Basquiat. *lol* After the gig, we tried to find the back stage door but no luck, so we went home.
No doubt next time they come back it will be at a bigger venue, so I'm glad I got in now. Just hope they don't leave it too long before they return. Fantastic!!!!
PS Yesterday I lost my voice through a cold, but today it's better after all that husky singing. Who'd have thought?
ecstatic

That thought makes me a very happy Mena.
...Daniel and Paul played facing each other, at one point almost resting their heads on each others' shoulders, and Paul and Carlos did that a lot too.
That one as well.
How come, like, everyone on my friend list is seeing Interpol?! Why can't I?! I need to see them when they come to America again...*grumbles*
2005-07-23 06:32 am (UTC)
Go hang out in NY and you can see them anytime. *LOL* Yeah, like it's that easy, but pffff, at least you're on the same continent as a supercool band!!!
2005-07-23 07:50 am (UTC)
Hah! I hate the American bands! I don't consider Interpol an American band, however, because two of the members weren't born here.
Meh, I'd rather be in Europe.
2005-07-23 11:59 am (UTC)
Who wouldn't rather be in Europe? I always get insanely jealous of UK people when I read the gig guide of the UK-based music mags. Oh, to take seeing all the bands I dream of for granted!
2005-07-23 08:33 pm (UTC)
...But if I were in the UK, I'd be like any other person. Here in America, I stand out, 'cos I'm an Anglophile. XD
2005-07-24 01:45 am (UTC)
Okay, so that's not really what we were talking about, but I just had to share that *blushes*
In Australia, it should be cool to be an Anglophile, I mean half the population originally came from the UK, but everyone's into America much more.
2005-07-26 02:15 am (UTC)
It's fine, your story was great!
Haha, as far as I'm concerned, America seems sooo much better than it really is when you see it on TV and such. It's got a huge false hype.
Maybe I just think that because I live here. Other people might not.
2005-07-26 10:33 am (UTC)
I think America would be a bit like Australia in that there's lots of cool stuff, you just have to know where to find it.
2005-07-26 08:42 pm (UTC)
Yeah, most likely. I don't know a lot about Australia, but that's the case in America.

GAH! I'm insanely jealous. And I just happened to be listening to Antics right now.
The only NY band coming to my neck in the woods (Singapore) is The Bravery. Haven't decided if I should go see them.
2005-07-23 11:57 am (UTC)
I'd go see The Bravery, even though I don't know many of their songs. It's nice to see a band live when you've heard a lot about them and make up your mind from the gig rather than the CD, just 'cos it happens so rarely. Then again, if you go and they're awful, don't blame me *lol*

And as for the Daniel Kessler, I'm a huge fan. :) I like Paul, but mainly in the Turn on the Bright Lights era. When he didn't need a haircut. How about a petition to get Paul Banks a haircut? Alex Kapranos had one to grow back his fringe, and Paul can have one to get rid of a few inches, ok like six, of his hair.

you most definately win... especially for mentioning this:

That comment seems to have gone down very well. Surprising that! *lol*

Had they played those 3 songs at Splendour I would have died a happy girl. But no. I screamed for them, oh hell did I scream, but no.
That show sounded wonderful. Carlos was being a stage-whore when I saw them too. But Daniel and Paul seemed most detached. And Sam was so far back he seemed to not exist.
Oh, and piles of envy as you have seen the one band left on my "MUST SEE BEFORE I DIE" list. Radiohead.
2005-08-28 01:40 pm (UTC)
Yes, you must see Radiohead. I saw them on the OK Computer tour, was in the front row and it was a religious experience. In some parts when only Thom was singing, you could have heard a pin drop. Everyone was entranced. *sigh* Ah, Thom love. I tried to see them in Melbourne last time they came, but I just got off the plane to be phoned by a friend saying, "the show's been cancelled". Still, I'd rather Thom save his voice for more recordings that ruin it singing for me (see how giving I am!).
2005-08-29 04:30 am (UTC)
Ahh, that will be most interesting.
Ach! An earlier tour. You lucky, lucky thing. Front row. Oh God. I can only imagine. I have a perfect picture of what they would be like in my mind, and what you and others have said only confirms this image.
That Melbourne thing upset me. I knew a few people that had put their lives on hold to go and how painfully excited they were. Funnily enough I didn't blame the band at all. I just felt a small understanding of missing a band you were so close to seeing and had been waiting to long to see.
That's a good attitude indeed!
2005-08-29 04:38 am (UTC)
Here's a question, what would be your ideal festival? Say, 5-10 bands, from any era.
2005-08-29 10:40 am (UTC)
From ANY era? Oh dear. That makes it quite difficult indeed. This would vary on a day to day basis, but right now I'd say...
Radiohead
Muse
Interpol
Franz Ferdinand
Wolfmother
The Libertines circa '02
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Joy Division
The Arcade Fire
The Hives
hmm, that's pretty damn random. Some are just amazing or loads of fun live rather than great bands in general. And some are bands I wish I'd seen.
Your turn!
2005-08-29 10:52 am (UTC)
Radiohead
Franz
Interpol
Bloc Party
Joy Division
The Arcade Fire
The Cure
Bauhaus
Duran Duran (circa 82)
David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust era)
Oh, there's so many more. I think it needs to be a two-day festival!
2005-08-29 12:20 pm (UTC)
Ooh, I ALMOST put Bowie in.
Bloc Party were good but I'm satisfied bloc-wise for the moment, The Cure would have been great in their hey-day rather than of late...
ahh I wish these things could actually happen
2005-08-29 12:24 pm (UTC)
The Cure on the Faith tour, that would be cool.
Yeah, a week for sure. Just for us, so we never had to jostle for front row, and we could party with all the bands inbetween. Okay, maybe a couple hundred of our closest friends, but that's it!
